Control Systems Engineer, up to £60,000 DOE, Manchester

Reporting to – Engineering Director


The Company

Edward Reed recruitment are searching for a Controls system Engineer to join our client, a Manchester based manufacturer of industrial leak detection machines. These systems are supplied globally to a number of diverse markets and ensure the leak integrity of the tested component to defined criteria. Typical components tested include a range of automotive and air conditioning components as well as gas meters, fire extinguishers and many others. The systems are constructed using a configuration of vacuum pumps, valves, sensors and pneumatics which are all controlled via a PLC and HMI/SCADA display. Test data is regularly stored or transmitted to a customer network server to ensure records of testing are maintained.

Due to recent expansion and an ever growing desire for innovation, a position has arisen for a Control Systems Engineer to work within the engineering team.



  • Minimum of HNC electrical engineering
  • Minimum 3 years of industry experience
  • Experience with PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems (preferably Allen Bradley / Siemens PLC’s, Wonderware SCADA).
  • Experience of software development for automation applications
  • Preferential – experience working with robotics and material handling solutions
  • Preferential – experience with alternative control platforms such as .NET framework


Primary Duties

  • To construct/configure PLC/HMI programs to operate the company’s products. (Primarily Rockwell/AB, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Intouch )
  • To configure barcode/printer software to enable recording of results and labelling of tested products.
  • To configure databases and/or data-logging systems to customer requirements and integrate into the machine control system.
  • To liaise with customer IT departments to configure and enable the transfer of test data to customer networks.
  • To liaise with robotic and automation partners when integrating machines into production environments and to help expand such capabilities within VES
  • To assist in the commissioning of software constructed for Company products.
  • To investigate and develop products considered for integration into machine designs.
  • Where necessary, attend customer sites to integrate, modify or back-up systems supplied by the Company.
  • To maintain documentation and backup systems.
  • To provide IT support within the Company software and hardware associated with control systems.
  • Assist sales staff in specifying control system requirements within tenders.
  • To assist in management of control system related tools and software packages for the global team
  • To support business development through innovation and continuous improvement of products and services


Secondary Duties

  • To assist in the construction of machine manuals.
  • To work with departmental personnel to assist in the specification and configuration of internal IT networks and software
